What the site covers
The law on taking control of goods in England and Wales: the notice that has to be given, when and how an agent can enter, what can and cannot be taken, what it costs, and how action can be challenged or paused. There are separate pages for Scotland and Northern Ireland, where the systems are different.
- Rights and rulesWhat bailiffs can and cannot do.
- By type of debtCouncil tax, parking, fines, court judgments and tax.
- Bailiff companiesWho the main enforcement firms are and how to check them.
- ToolsFees, dates, protected items and a stage-by-stage walkthrough.
Why the detail matters now
The rules changed on 1 May 2026. The notice period went from 7 clear days to 14, a 28-day extension was introduced, and the fee scale rose for the first time since 2014. A great deal of what is online still quotes the old figures. What changed in 2026

How pages are sourced
The starting point for every page is the legislation itself: Schedule 12 to the Tribunals, Courts and Enforcement Act 2007, the Taking Control of Goods Regulations 2013 and the Fees Regulations 2014, as amended. After that come the Civil Procedure Rules, GOV.UK, the House of Commons Library and the Enforcement Conduct Board. Each page ends with the sources it relies on and the date it was last checked.
The pages do not say which course of action someone should take. That is advice, and it depends on a person’s circumstances, so it is given by a debt adviser on a call and not on a web page.

We do not charge for speaking to you. If you choose a debt solution, you are referred to one of our trusted debt solution providers, and we receive a fee if you enter into an agreement with one of them. A debt solution may have fees, which are explained before anything is agreed.
Free debt advice is available
These organisations give free, impartial debt advice and are independent of Bailiff Support Team. Nobody has to use a paid or commercial service to get help with their debts, and using one of the free services does not reduce the options available. Their advisers can also ask an enforcement firm to extend a notice period or apply for Breathing Space where it fits.
